What is Service-Learning?

Service-Learning is a teaching strategy that combines meaningful service to the community with academic instruction and develops:

  • critical thinking
  • employability skills
  • expertise in various subjects
  • civic responsibility

The Program

SFCC's Service-Learning Program does the following for SFCC students:

  • Ensures the availability of service-learning opportunities for all SFCC students.
  • Provides training and support to students, faculty, staff and community participants.
  • Participates in service-learning partnerships with community organizations, employers and governmental organizations.
  • Helps students develop transferable employability skills.
  • Arranges for students to obtain up to six regular or honors credits for their service-learning experiences.

The Benefits

Service-Learning can provide the following benefits to students:

  • making curriculum relevant to student's daily lives
  • building a sense of community responsibility
  • encouraging multicultural awareness
  • developing problem-solving skills
  • building career competencies

Many of the activities of the Service-Learning Program have been supported by the Corporation for National Service - Learn and Serve America: Higher Education in the past.
