School of Arts and Design--Fine Arts and Performing Arts Department

Department goals and philosophy

Let your imagination soar! SFCC’s Fine Arts Department is committed to developing creative, inquisitive and analytical students. Through the study of art, you will begin to recognize the connections between art and other disciplines like math, physics and music. We encourage you to present and evaluate your own work and develop the ability to interpret the work of others. In the Fine Arts programs, you will increase your skill levels and have the opportunity to see how an artist’s life works for you. Our graduates become practicing artists, dancers, actors and musicians and find jobs in galleries, museums, theaters and other art-related institutions. An Associates Degree in Fine Arts, Dance or Gallery Management can enable you to transfer a to four year college as a junior.

    Ricky Mayhugh
    Gallery Management/Business Administration Programs
    Ricky Mayhugh - Gallery Management
“When we moved to Santa Fe, I wanted to work in a gallery setting. I had no experience and had been out of the workforce for 13 years. By attending classes at SFCC I have learned the how to hang and label art, how to properly light a gallery space, and how to use positive and negative space within a gallery.

I've also learned basic business software and taken classes in Photoshop, InDesign, and digital photography. I've learned about art history, contemporary art, and the history of women in art. I have improved my writing skills and broadened my knowledge of business and social concerns. If you want to understand what makes a gallery a welcoming, inviting space this program offers that knowledge.”

Ricky is a student employee in the Fine Arts Gallery and with the Art on Campus program. He plans to work full time while he earns an additional associate's degree in business administration.
