Educational Leadership Division--Adult Basic Education Department
Department goals and philosophy
If you are 16 or older and not enrolled in high school, you can get free instruction in GED test preparation, English as a second language, and basic math, reading and writing through SFCC’s Adult Basic Education classes. You will be tested to determine your skill level and screened for learning difficulties, then we’ll create a program just for you. We offer both traditional classes and individualized instruction, plus a computer lab where you can focus on your specific learning needs. Adult Basic Education also includes the Literacy Volunteers program that offers workplace, neighborhood and one-on-one tutoring. This can be an option for students who can’t attend regular classes or are unable to use the lab.

Robert Valencia
GED Program
“When I was almost 17, I learned I was going to be a dad and decided I needed to straighten out my life and be a role model to my son. In October 2007 I completed my GED, after participating in classes through the Youthworks program in partnership with SFCC’s Adult Basic Education program.
Getting my GED helped me to get a better job as well as made me believe that I can achieve anything as long as I work hard and never quit. I would recommend that other students do their studies at Youthworks as well because they work with you at your own pace and actually listen to what you have to say.”
Currently Robert is the case manager for the New Mexico Young Fathers Project. He is a full-time student at SFCC and plans to earn a degree in business administration and management.
