Read about the ENLACE/GEARUP Collaborative in the Santa Fe New Mexican: Helping to break the college barrier

The ENLACE/GEAR UP Collaborative is a partnership between Santa Fe Community College (SFCC), Northern New Mexico College (NNMC), the Center of Education and Study of Diverse Education (CESDP) at New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) and the public school systems in Santa Fe, Espanola, Pojoaque, and Las Vegas.

The collaborative works with students, teachers, administrators, and parents to:

  • Increase academic performance and college readiness among low income students and students who are first from their family to pursue college
  • Increase the rates of graduation and participation in college
  • Increase student and parent educational expectation and knowledge of post-secondary education options and financial aid.

College Preparation

The ENLACE/GEAR UP Collaborative at SFCC has partnered with local school districts to implement the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. AVID in Northern New Mexico now serves over 600 middle and high school students at 10 schools in a college preparatory elective class.

AVID is a national college preparatory program that supports student success in rigorous AP coursework through Socratic style tutorials lead by college students. AVID's teaching strategies, curriculum, and professional development trainings are used not only in the AVID elective class, but by subject-area teachers school wide. Over 200 middle and high school content area teachers in Northern New Mexico have been trained in AVID strategies.

Student Leadership

The ENLACE/GEAR UP Collaborative has developed leadership curriculum for the HUDV 270 Service Leadership class, which focuses on developing leadership for social change. Students enrolled are trained in facilitation, effective communication, conflict resolution, and team development. Trained students serve as tutors, mentors, facilitators, and student leaders in their schools and communities.
