The Federal Pell Grant Program

THE FEDERAL PELL GRANT PROGRAM

The Federal Pell Grant Program provides grants to undergraduate students who have financial need and meet other requirements.

Although the U.S. Department of Education calculates the student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and performs certain eligibility matches, SFCC has many responsibilities in administering the program. We must ensure that a student meets the general eligibility requirements for any aid that is disbursed. To receive a Pell grant, you must:

  1. Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
  2. Declare an eligible major.
  3. Enroll in eligible courses. Some ineligible courses include GED and Continuing Education classes. Financial aid does not pay for classes taken in "audit" status. In addition, students may not receive financial aid for more than 30 credit hours of attempted developmental coursework.
  4. Maintain financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).
  5. Not be in default on any federal educational loans.
  6. Not owe a refund on a grant.
  7. Sign a statement of educational purpose (FAFSA).
  8. You must comply with Selective Service Registration.
  9. Have a high school diploma ot GED.
  10. Not receive a Pell Grant from more than one college for the same period of time.

Pell Grants range from $400 to $4731
