What Does Distance Learning Look Like?

Action central for distance learning is the Learning Management System (LMS). Santa Fe Community College and the IDEAL-NM Network use the popular Blackboard LMS. The photo above illustrates how a typical course might look once yours becomes available (the course begin date; not before). Yours will be different, but there are three basic components to the screen:
- Course Tools. All the tools you will need to participate in the course. Many courses do not include such an extensive set of tools.
- My Tools. You have constant access to your assignment, participation, quiz and test scores as well as your progress within the course, plus a place to keep your own notes.
- Content. The content of each course tool appears in this area. Note above that we are on the Course Content page, the starting point for most classes. Most of the action takes place in the Learning Modules. They contain instructions for the week plus links to online presentations, materials, resources and everything else you need.
Piece of cake, right?! Well, not quite. Distance learning is not for everyone. But if you have the self-discipline, the right equipment and a good Internet connection, it may be for you.
