Resume Rescue: Tips and Resources for a Better Resume:

life preserver"I was PERFECT for that job!  If I could have just gotten an interview, I could have shown them!"

Without an eye-catching, ONE PAGE resume, that is skimmable and focuses specifically on the job you are pursuing, your odds of getting that interview and the chance to convince potential employers that you are the best candidate are slim.

Many people make the mistake of assuming that if they're smart and experienced, they should be able to put together an excellent resume.  If you are serious about being competetive and really want that job, we recommend you consult an expert who has been assembling successful resumes for years.  SFCC Career Services offers this service to students, staff, faculty and community members for FREE.

Damn GoodWe cannot overemphasize the importance of having an excellent resume -- not just a competent one, but one that makes you look your best and stand out from the crowd, a resume that rocks, a "Damn Good Resume" like the single-page, functional style examples in the only resume book and format we recommend by Yana Parker in The Damn Good Resume Guide.  Copies of this guide are available in the SFCC Library, Santa Fe Public Library and at your local bookstore.

TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND FOR A GOOD RESUME:

  • Job applications ask everyone for the same information in the same format.  YOUR RESUME IS YOUR CHANCE TO STAND OUT.
  • Many resumes don't get past screening HR staff or computers who are simply matching words in resumes to their job descriptions.  TAILOR YOUR RESUME TO THE JOB DESCRIPTION, USING THEIR LANGUAGE.
  • Candidates often make the mistake of giving too much information.  Your resume should be brief and a sort of tease, to make them want to meet you and learn more about you and your skills.
  • Consider this; do you want a competent resume that keeps you in the pack of competant candidates or one that makes you pull ahead of the pack and stand out?

GET YOUR ACTION WORDS AND PHRASES HERE:  In addition to ensuring your resume style is visually attractive, what you say about yourself is important.  We use O*NET as a resource aide to find the right words to describe the tasks you have performed and skills you have developed.

Follow these instructions when you go to O*NET.

  • In the QUICK SEARCH box in the upper right corner type in a job title to call up a list that includes that occupation or related occupations.
  • Select an OCCUPATION TITLE
  • Scroll down to the first section, titled TASKS
  • Cut and paste these skills to a word document and use them as a basis for the work skills you will list on your resume
  • Do this for all the jobs for which you need volcabulary and skill descriptions
